I wrote this song while I was at the bottom. My father had just taken his own life in a violent suicide. I had lost my music venue/studio in the pandemic long with my entire life savings. I had been cut off from my entire social network, and every single friend in my life because I left the Mormon church that same year. I had no family or friends. I was homeless.
I decided to jump off a bridge. I could not take the pain anymore. There was no purpose in life.
There was a tall bridge at the end of a trail I hiked often. I started my trek toward the bridge when suddenly I was stopped by an old man with white hair walking his dog.
"Hey!" he shouted, stopping me in my tracks. He walked in front of me, looked me in the eyes and said, "You are loved son."
I thought this man was crazy, I had never met him. I didn't respond, just tried to move out of the way...
Then he stepped in front of me again and said, "Don't let them get you down."
These words hit me like a bolt of lightning. It was exactly what I needed to here. I felt valued, understood and first the first time in years, it felt like someone actually cared about me. I started crying as the man stood there in silence with a stoic look on his face. Wiping my tears, I thanked the man and turned around.
Instead of continuing to the bridge, I returned to my car and wrote this song. Recording the vocals in the backseat, with nothing but my iPhone and Logic Pro.
