This is how simple it is to do private posts for friends… When the user unfollows someone: Generate a new content key Re-encrypt all posts with the new key Re-create key envelopes for all remaining followers Update keys/_self.json with the new content key The unfollowed user’s old key no longer decrypts anything From this post https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47344548

There’s something very sick about big creators pushing for “no algorithms” (looking at you, Louis Rossmann). If there were no algorithms, there would be no way to discover new creators (AKA competitors to the big creators). “Algorithms are evil” = “Only follow me. I know what’s best. Trust me. You don’t need anyone else.”

I think so too. It’s possible to lock down email to only government approved servers and give exceptions only to major corporations, but I think we only see that level of lockdown in North Korea. Other countries like Russia and China are under a much less restricted sort of “firewall” 📝 9f868cbf…

Someone said something interesting in favor of Delta Chat vs other decentralized messengers. > It is often easier to block protocols, because they often have plaintext metadata that says “I am protocol X”. Deltachat messages say “I am an e-mail”, and any government that blocked all e-mails would abruptly have serious problems.

Is there goodreads or letterboxd on Nostr yet? Just include TMDB (the movie database) or Open Library db for connecting the actual book or movie data to posts.

Has anyone made a relay with a whitelist based on proven physical locations (by mailing auth codes to real addresses)? @rabble some group was considering that right?

I like the idea of Good Old Games (GOG) in terms of them not being able to randomly revoke your games, but if you can’t sell your game to someone else (like sell your key), then there isn’t much point. Digital ownership means that you can let someone borrow the thing or you can sell it to them. You still can’t do that with GOG.

I have some concerns about the Marmot protocol / whitenoise.chat @JeffG > Messages in White Noise are encrypted end-to-end and temporarily relayed through several Nostr servers, which cannot read them and don’t permanently store them. Relays act as transient delivery points, discarding data after transmission. How can we guarantee that they don’t permanently store them? If they do, this is a clear “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” attack. > Users can further prioritize privacy by selecting trusted relays or hosting their own, Messages are designed to be propagated on Nostr. It’s a gossip protocol. It’s not designed to have access control lists at the foundation. So how does running our own server actually help us? > ensuring no single entity retains control over their communications. See, this statement frames the concern as being about “my communication is being blocked”. But the real concern is “my communication is being harvested and decrypted by 3 letter agencies”.

Urbit is better than Nostr. But Urbit can be built on top of Nostr.

Nostr needs more safety built into it. ACLs for who can read your data, etc. If that needs to happen in a L2, so be it. But until you can control who can read your data, there will be no mass adoption.
