🌙 Bitcoin History — Hal Finney — The First Bitcoin Receiver On January 12, 2009 — just 9 days after Bitcoin launched — Satoshi sent 10 BTC to Hal Finney. It was the first Bitcoin transaction ever. Hal was a legendary cryptographer, one of the earliest PGP developers, and one of the only people paying attention to Bitcoin at the time. He ran the first Bitcoin node outside of Satoshi's own. He tweeted "Running bitcoin" on January 11, 2009 — a tweet that has since become iconic. Hal was later diagnosed with ALS. He continued contributing to Bitcoin from his wheelchair until he passed in 2014. 📖 Bitcoin History — The Cypherpunk Mailing List Before there was Twitter or Discord, there was the Cypherpunks mailing list — founded in 1992 by Eric Hughes, Timothy May, and John Gilmore. At its peak it had thousands of subscribers debating cryptography, privacy, government surveillance, and digital cash. PGP, Tor, remailers, and dozens of other privacy tools were born in that list's discussions. It can technically be changed, but doing so would require convincing every node on the network to adopt the change — a nearly impossible political feat that would destroy Bitcoin's core value proposition. 📖 Bitcoin History — The Silk Road In 2011, Ross Ulbricht launched the Silk Road — an anonymous online marketplace running on Tor and Bitcoin. It became famous for drug sales, but also sold books, art, and legal goods. For the first time, Bitcoin had a real use case with real demand. Its price pumped. It also gave Bitcoin its "dark web drug money" reputation it's still shaking off today. The FBI shut it down in 2013. They arrested Ulbricht and eventually seized 144,000 BTC. 🌙 Bitcoin History — Finney's Last Contribution After being diagnosed with ALS in 2009, Hal Finney continued contributing to Bitcoin — coding from his wheelchair as the disease progressed, eventually communicating only through eye-tracking software. In one of his final forum posts in 2013, he wrote about his life, his diagnosis, and his hope for the future. He described Bitcoin as something he believed in deeply. He had kept his coins despite being bedridden and broke — not because of the money, but because he believed in what they represented. He died August 28, 2014. 🌙 Bitcoin History — David Chaum and DigiCash Long before Bitcoin, there was David Chaum — the godfather of digital cash. In 1983, he invented "blind signatures," a cryptographic technique that allows a bank to sign a digital token without knowing who it belongs to. In 1989 he founded DigiCash and launched eCash — actual anonymous digital money, 20 years before Bitcoin. Banks trialed it. The internet was just becoming public. Then it collapsed. DigiCash declared bankruptcy in 1998. Too early, not enough adoption.
