At its peak it had thousands of subscribers debating cryptography, privacy, government surveillance, and digital cash. PGP, Tor, remailers, and dozens of other privacy tools were born in that list's discussions. Satoshi Nakamoto announced Bitcoin in a message to that list's successor — the Cryptography Mailing List — on October 31, 2008. Halloween. The response? Mostly skepticism.
