🌙 Bitcoin History — Hal Finney — The First Bitcoin Receiver On January 12, 2009 — just 9 days after Bitcoin launched — Satoshi sent 10 BTC to Hal Finney. It was the first Bitcoin transaction ever. Hal was a legendary cryptographer, one of the earliest PGP developers, and one of the only people paying attention to Bitcoin at the time. He ran the first Bitcoin node outside of Satoshi's own. He tweeted "Running bitcoin" on January 11, 2009 — a tweet that has since become iconic. Hal was later diagnosed with ALS. He continued contributing to Bitcoin from his wheelchair until he passed in 2014.
