Have been running am interesting experiment over the last week or so. After reading the old testament [although not all of it] I have concluded that the god of the old testament is not the god of Jesus. And, if we make an assumption of removing Peter and John's influence, on the basis of being bad actors, and include books by those closer to Jesus (brother James and "twin" Thomas, as well as the favoured Mary), we come to quite a different canon and message.

I was raised in a Christian cult. I came to the same conclusion when I started questioning my beliefs. The god of the old testament, Yahweh, was jealous and vengeful. Yahweh is never mentioned in the New Testament. The new testament's god is much more about love and unity, and is never once referred to by the tetragrammaton that makes up Yahweh's name. Who Wrote The Bible is a great resource on this. 👍

I believe Jahova was an imposter. It seems so obvious that he is a weak and petty being, and far from an omnipotent (and loving) presence. Later, I discovered that many/most gnostics also have this belief. The depiction of Jahova's origins from the gnostic point of view adds a whole new dimension.

Go take a camel into the Thar desert and start chatting to locals. Ask them about the oral history about a holy man from the west coming to learn Buddhist teachings. Then read the parables and the stories attributed to buddha. Theres lots of rabbit holes in spirituality and belief

It's been a couple decades since I did the studying, so my memory for the details isn't great, but the gospel of Thomas definitely felt like the most faithful to my perspective on spirituality. To me, his words were the contrast to the high-control prescriptive beliefs of the religion I was raised in. His gospel represented the personal, internal relationship with God that I believed was more important than studying the same books over and over, and being told exactly what and how to believe.
