It's been a couple decades since I did the studying, so my memory for the details isn't great, but the gospel of Thomas definitely felt like the most faithful to my perspective on spirituality. To me, his words were the contrast to the high-control prescriptive beliefs of the religion I was raised in. His gospel represented the personal, internal relationship with God that I believed was more important than studying the same books over and over, and being told exactly what and how to believe.
