I was raised in a Christian cult. I came to the same conclusion when I started questioning my beliefs. The god of the old testament, Yahweh, was jealous and vengeful. Yahweh is never mentioned in the New Testament. The new testament's god is much more about love and unity, and is never once referred to by the tetragrammaton that makes up Yahweh's name.
