It's one of the most common questions about Alberta sovereignty, and the answer is already settled in Canadian law. In 1998, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in the Reference re Secession of Quebec that any province has the legal right to pursue independence, provided there is a clear majority vote on a clear question. Two years later, Parliament passed the Clarity Act, which confirmed the same principle: if a clear majority of voters in a province vote to leave on a clear question, the federal government is legally obligated to negotiate. No new laws are needed. No constitutional amendments are required. The legal pathway already exists. Understanding the legal framework is essential to understanding the full picture.

When decisions get made in Ottawa, Alberta's voice is among the quietest in the room.  That’s by design Alberta holds just 6 of 105 Senate seats. That is 5.7% of the upper chamber. Meanwhile, Ontario and Quebec together control 58.8% of Senate representation and consistently vote as a bloc on issues that directly affect Alberta's energy sector, taxation, and resource management. The result is a structural imbalance that has real consequences. Federal legislation like Bill C-69, the carbon tax, and pipeline restrictions were passed with minimal meaningful input from Alberta's representatives. Yet Albertans bear a disproportionate share of the economic cost. This isn't about partisan politics; it's simple math. The math always maths and the math doesn’t lie. Under the current system, Alberta's interests will always be outvoted by central Canada. For $25, $50, $100 or $400 you can support APP's mission to educate and inform Albertans about these realities. When decisions get made in Ottawa, Alberta's voice is among the quietest in the room.  https://nb.albertaprosperity.com/donate?e=10bde6a25acd994…

Alberta holds the world's third-largest proven oil and gas reserves. There is over $178 trillion in resource wealth sitting beneath our feet. Rather than that money benefiting Albertans, every year tens of billions more goes Ottawa than Alberta receives back. The opportunity cost is staggering. While global energy demand continues to grow and competitors scramble to monetize their reserves, Alberta's ability to fully capitalize on its own resources has been constrained by federal policies, pipeline restrictions, and decisions made in Ottawa not Alberta. Understanding the true scale of Alberta's resource wealth is the first step in understanding what a different future could look like. If you support APP's mission to educate Albertans about their economic potential, you can donate here.

We've modeled what independence could mean for the average Albertan earning $78,000 a year and the numbers are worth understanding. Currently, Albertans send $15-27 billion more to Ottawa annually than we receive back in services and programs. That's wealth generated here, leaving here. Based on Alberta's resource base and fiscal position, here's what our modelling suggests: In year one of independence, the Alberta government could deliver a significant income tax reduction while still fully funding its services. By year five, the province's resource revenues could eliminate the need for personal income tax altogether. There are legitimate questions about what independence would cost and those are worth asking. What the numbers also show is that Alberta has the resource wealth and fiscal capacity to become one of the most tax-competitive jurisdictions in North America. That would mean more disposable income for families, and a more attractive environment for business investment and job creation. https://nb.albertaprosperity.com/donate?
