Small acts of defiance are important because they exercise the muscles that could eventually be used for more significant acts of defiance.
For me, I always opt out of the photos that they try to take of me at the airport. I just hand them my ID, say “I’d like to opt out of the photo please” and smile. I tell them to have a nice day as I walk by. I can’t imagine the TSA worker loves their job, so I bet a smile and a friendly comment could go a long way. Much better than getting my soul sucked by some humiliation ritual of surveillance and silently passing by with my tail between my legs. You can opt out of the photo at both regular security and customs checkpoints.
It felt awkward the first couple times, but now it gives me energy and power!
