Small acts of defiance are important because they exercise the muscles that could eventually be used for more significant acts of defiance. For me, I always opt out of the photos that they try to take of me at the airport. I just hand them my ID, say “I’d like to opt out of the photo please” and smile. I tell them to have a nice day as I walk by. I can’t imagine the TSA worker loves their job, so I bet a smile and a friendly comment could go a long way. Much better than getting my soul sucked by some humiliation ritual of surveillance and silently passing by with my tail between my legs.
