I've often fantasized about hacking a receipt printer to print out what normally we check apps for - todo lists, RSS feed updates, crossword puzzles, etc - imagine anything you glance at on a phone, but printed out once or twice a day and waiting for you. you pick that up and go have your coffee with paper and pens. your smart phone migrates more and more towards being "a phone" again, for timely, urgent contact. computers and tablets for focused, intentional work)

Big fan of this. I'm getting ready to put a handset back on my desk. Call me at home XD. On phone though, I have been running a pbx and a set of cisco ata for my commercial number. Voipms just recently included free SMS options for some plans I haven't looked into yet though.

I've seriously considered getting a beeper to avoid being geo-tracked. phone in a faraday bag, only comes out for an urgent page.

I had a similar fantasy. Only a normal printer for RSS articles. The printer would sit in a public place, and it would spit out cool stuff for people to read. There are LaTeX templates that can make it look like news paper. It would be easy to automate.

This thread is so valuable, and it makes me sad knowing that hundreds of people, who would have been so envisioned by it, will not see it. Tysm 🥲🫂

Good chance I'm considering going opposite though. A cheap data-only SIM. My pbx handles routing, emailed voicemail transcription etc. I was looking into the newer Garmin GPS recently and might pull the trigger. Also they make those cheap SIM capable mobile routers with battery packs and wireguard built-in I was also considering that as a replacement for a traditional cellular plan.

Maybe I don't know what pbx is. is a data-only SIM not getting pinged from cell towers in the setup you're describing?

no smart watch / bluetooth headphones / car as well?

i use an analog watch already. i don't need bluetooth headphones on me everywhere I go (and if I do take them, they don't have to be on constantly). the car is the big problem, yes.

Go to you're nearest thrift shop. Bet you they have a mack-daddy, comercial pro-3000 luxury handset sitting on the shelf for $3 if you're into that. I have a few, one is an ATT branded thing I like. Quality is butt cheeks, but id like to find a better one someday.

i need to print a new grip for my cheap and shitty bow which disfavors my switch handedness. the limbs and string are ok but the only way i can fire it properly is if i hold it as is natural for me, left hand grip, right hand on the nock and string, but then i have to put the arrow through the bow to the left to land on the shelf. also, i've thought about that idea with the phones. i think there's an antique 70s redphone in the house i'm staying at. the label panel on the rotary dial is floating around in the kitchen for some reason. would be kinda fun to make one of those proper old phones with rotary dial work. i mean, the circuit to read the number is retardedly simple. can't even comprehend how i used to spend hours with one of those old handsets stuck to my head. the things you will do to get pussy eh?

I still have some files from 2 years ago when I was testing it. Sadly no notes. I am prety sure it was as easy as piping one thing into another. XML from the feed to markdown converted with pandoc, into latex with a selected template.

Don't think it's any better in terms of privacy, but it's a lot cheaper (or was, haven't looked into mobile plans in a long time), and it would condition me into not using it or relying on it often such that I could turn it all off and use it only when I need it out and about. I'm not away enough or need critical alerts to need a beeper for example, so Id just leave it all at home I guess XD Shame they don't really make actually dump flip phones anymore. PBX is a Private Branch Exchange (iirc). Just a server that routes a SIP trunk line(s) (voip) to individual devices like ATA's (desk phone) or mobile/desktop SIP apps for example. It can do smart things like voicemail, automated messaging, menus, transcribing, and a ton of other fun nerdy things.

they do make dumb flip phones, I have a simple nokia on a basic plan that I keep around just in case. but it'll still geo-track you with cell towers, regardless of how dumb the phone is.

It also give me a little more ownership or control over my phone number. If it's a DID owned by my account on my SIP provider, I can provision that number to any device I want with my pbx, I don't need permission from my mobile carrier to which device/sim it belongs to. I can move carriers without worrying about transferring my number.

could always own a "pre-fangs" model. ..but then you're taking on a lot of maintenance of an older vehicle.

ChipTuner4d ago
Yup. Tradeoffs, only worth it if your time is cheap and you invest in the tools to fix em. From someone who used to modify old vehicle firmware professionally.

I just sunk a bunch of money into the tools [and time] required to get my home networking in a place I'm happy with. Lots of crawling around and snaking cables - all good fun. Might hold off on building out an auto garage for a bit :)

not old enough. onstar? xm radio? tire pressure sensors?

ChipTuner4d ago
Onstar was GM in i think 2006 or later, didn't make its way to other vehicles till a bit later. And no, AM/FM when it works. TPMS was more of a German car think in the early 00s not US domestically till a bit later. Also early models used really basic RF.

Can you let me know what model? As far as I have seen the Nokias run a "nokia os" afaik was an android-like base. They still have modern radios and features like BT and wifi and such?

Ford was pretty dumb until about their 2008 body styles. Even mustangs only had AM/FM until at least 2007, with the high-end systems only having 3.5mm optionally. Now Lincoln might have had something fancier as part of the entertainment system, Im very familiar with their drive-train controls from 80s-2007.

ChipTuner4d ago
This goes for most US domestics in their 2006-2009 bodystyle changes. Chrysler being the last of the pack. Cadillac and Lincoln coming in with newer features like that. All easily removable. Lately there has been a massive "open source" improvement around J-2435 firmware flashing for 00s GMs, I can't legally speak to though.

looks like lincoln had rescu in the 90s (along with every luxury make), but the rest of ford didn't get telematics until that ~2010 refresh. you might be in a good place
