I grew up in a culture that expected government repression. As a child I was regularly told by grownups that, one day, I would be an outlaw through no fault of my own; that one day I would need to take my family and flee in order to continue to practice the religion I was born into. I was also told that many of the people I trusted would be double, would be duplicitous and selfish. I was never told this by my family, for which I’m grateful. Only people who “look out for the interests of others” would approach me and scare the living shit out of me as an elementary school student. Some people are really something.
