You can do this!!! I got myself a rotary cutter from Walmart, and a 24" cutting mat (not crucial but entirely helpful!) And cut fabric into 1" strips. Connect strips with either a knot or the snip a hole in both ends and pull through (lmk if you don't understand and I'll try and explain harder, but the knot also works totally fine...) and roll into balls of tshirt yarn. Then, once you have some yarn balls going, begin by making a crochet chain some length and then waistcoat stitch the rest. @Yarnlady ๐Ÿงถ had some great resources to help me learn to crochet! Once you get that stitches down and it's burned in your brain, you can do this totally mindlessly... as I have been most of today ๐Ÿคช

I've also been adding in some stitches around the ends to keep it from warping as you can imagine because the turns get bigger the wider they get

Try increasing 4 stitches every corner at the same place, it gets square-ish then :)

Yes! I've also tried with a sewing machine. I braided the strips and sewed together with a zig-zag stitch. Mine did not turn out how I wanted... it was more like a bag and wouldn't lay flat, I didn't figure out how to correct it. Crochet has been way more successful for me. I just learned how to do it a couple months ago after a lifetime of being convinced it was way too complicated for me. It took me some trial and error but I've got this stich down now!
