Translation : I can throw my Android phone in trash in 6 months. Unregistered apps to Google will stop working. I need alternative and I don't want to buy a fucking Google phone for GrapheneOS to be able to escape Google. Any idea ? #privacy #Android #asknostr

have you already done an assessment of what you need a phone for? there your answer will be. calls and texts? maps and nav? camera? these can all be run on an SBC or laptop with headset and much effort and time.

I use it for almost everything, same as my computer. I'd love grapheneos but paying Google to use it is a big no for me. I like privacy and the freedom to install anything I want on my phone. How is SBC gonna help me ? I have to check this out.

Apparently Motorola will come out with a @5468bcee…4605c9ed phone sometime next year.

Nice, I can't wait to see that. I was never a fan of their physical keyboard but let's see what they come up with.

Which will most likely register as “uncertified” in the playstore, leaving you with limited functionality. It won’t matter if your bootloader is locked, Google will still block you from using banking apps or apps like Netflix.

You could buy a linux phone. I saw @4eb88310…2e055d6d mentioned two different ones the last day or today (depends on your timezone 😄)

Graphene doesn’t offer you anything to combat this, they can’t override the store’s policies just because it’s a modified OS and you can already download apk’s from random websites, so I don’t know why people are freaking out. Personally, if your app is in the store, you should be required to identify yourself, it’s really weird that people take offense to this.🤷🏻‍♂️

You mean grapheneos will also face the issue of installing random apk?

gmail was refusing to deliver email to my custom domain proton mail address, from a friend. he had no idea. he was talking into the void, thinking he had upset me. if they are sunsetting use of google without being tied to their surveillance grid, so be it, i guess. good. they are on the back foot, and this proves it.

We got two options: 1. Every human on earth with a phone starts protesting **now**, and convinces Google to change his mind. 2. We all buy a Nokia

Yes this is a good option too, give up smartphone completely and use a dumb phone and Linux computer. I don't know 🤷🏻‍♂️

So Graphene will be unaffected? That is good. Motarolla will be rolling out Graphene on their devices formally next year.

Yes I think it won't, or I missed something otherwise. I'll be watching Motorola too 👍🏻

my bf is looking into motorola and oneplus nord phones because theyre going to be one of the few phones where you can still use the bootloader so you can root it and have a custom rom experience. and im hoping i said that right because im just repeating what hes said without much tech experience myself. but hopefully that helps

Not likely. They’re not going to sacrifice access to the playstore when their devices sell perfectly fine right now. Motorola is getting onboard because they could see themselves being left in the dust and partnering with graphene is the only way they can stay relevant.

True that I plan to get a second cheap phone just for the odd banking app. Some banks are also open to adapting it seems: https://x.com/GrapheneOS/status/1958252476265541819

if you go and research these phones you find a major deadend.. they are outdated hardware, for a very expensive price, with a company that is unlikely to continue to exist. They are still riding it out purely on linux enthusiasts keep getting fooled into buying one.. seems scammy to me to promote anything to do with them. there are no good options, but I prefer raspberry pi or other arm devices because at least then you get what you paid for.

The problem is that every app will have to be verified to be installed on Android, not only the software that is published on the Play Store. This also touches alternative stores like F-Droid. To make an example, is like blocking apps in Windows that are from "an unkwnown source". If you want to develop apps on Android, you will have to be recognized from Google first. Android is no longer an open platform in the way we used to think of.

If I can ask, why GrapheneOS isn't a option for you? It's because you would have to give money to Google anyway by buying their smartphone?

Yes exactly, I would love to try grapheneos, seems awesome but yes giving money to Google really piss me off 😄

There’s really no “adapting”, you are either ok with a secure app working on an unsecured device or you’re not. Graphene may, ironically, be more secure than stock, but the bank doesn’t know that and it certainly doesn’t know the person operating it.
0000 sats
frphank1d ago
I think the bank knows about security of @5468bcee…4605c9ed. @5468bcee…4605c9ed has some special security and attestation features even they're just different from Google Android.

The point is, regardless of the software it’s running, if it’s not stock, it’s not going to work. If it does, it will be on a per bank basis. In other words, your bank may be cool with operating on a modified Os but that doesn’t mean every bank will. How about streaming services, do those work? Is it again going to be on a per brand basis? Will Netflix work but Disney+ won’t? The days of buying a device just so I can flash third party software and wonder what apps will and will not work, are far behind me. I go
