One of the reasons we have microplastics that we don't talk about, is the "biodegradation" additives in plastic, mandated by law and regulations in Western countries since the 1970s.
The additives compromise the polymer's strength when new, reduce its useful lifespan, and force it to become microplastics at end-of-life, rather than depositing whole in sediments or landfill.
1970s Westerners achieved their dream of being able to litter without (visible) consequences, but the price was too high, and no politician wants to walk it back...
