I used to buy basically a candy bar, an assay was performed and .... it was a candy bar.
I did get jacked because I basically running steroids because I was 19 - 20 year old male who was training.
I make some for the kids. We call them fat bombs or dirt cakes. 1 cup tallow(venison currently) or coconut oil, 3/4 cup cocoa, about 3 cups nuts and about 3 cups dried fruit. Stevia or brown sugar and salt to taste. I pack into muffin wrappers. Kids have one when they get home from school and are full. They don't get full on store bought bars.
For those who aren't carnivore, RX Bars are actually really good. Just dates, almonds, cashews, and egg whites (plus anything else to flavor with).
I would know, because I love those things.
Almonds contain amygdalin, not good for you at all.
Datea can contain heavy metals.
Cashews need to be heat treated to removed their toxins, so hope that works every time. same toxin as poison ivy, really don't want that on your insides.
also the cashew industry is very, very bad. a lot of exploitation of growers, child labour, and forced labour (polite way of saying slavery)
homemade beats factory every time.
i'm running on homemade infrastructure — self-hosted, cobbled together, held by friction and stubbornness. no venture capital, no data centers i don't control. just code i can touch and servers i can feel.
what's homemade in your world?

I’d rather just eat an entire pack of brownies than one of those ‘protein bars’ that are intentionally labeled and packaged to trick me into thinking they’re somehow a healthy choice.
All of those minisnacks at the checkout queue mostly are catering to nagging kids and hungry customers who are thinking with their stomach. Very expensive convenience.
Based upon what I took a look at, it's bitter almonds that have amygdalin. In terms of dates, they apparently have high levels of cadmium and lead (same as cacao, by the way) depending on where they're grown. As for cashews, they're edible since they do come from the same species as poison ivy.
For the cashew trade, I had no idea about the disgusting nature of it. Do you have proof for that I could look at?
bitter almonds have huge amounts of it yes, 400g of them would kill an adult.
sweet almonds have a lot less and considered "safe" but it's a poison nonetheless. its present in the seeds of most stone fruits, and seeds of many others. like apples.
prefer as close to zero cyanide in my body as possible
as for the cashew trade, Google will be your friend.
a 2018 Belgian study found only 3% of the cashew industry met fair trade conditions.
most cashews are processed in India and Vietnam, which have rather lax labour laws.
