I'm pretty much a caveman in modern clothes as a circus comedy act so I try not to judge other people having less than enlightened views. That said, I can't help but notice that those assumptions must come from somewhere.

it's just the stereotype that submission in a man is weakness (especially to a woman), unless it's in service to warfare, country, god, or the ruling class in some way—then it's loyalty. and since it's weakness, then a woman must be mean or controlling to exploit it. and so it's often framed this way (movies, media, porn, etc.), and it makes these examples more obvious irl. but submission is seldom framed as a choice—as devotion. in one way or another, sacrifice is often part of masculinity. and one of the most dominant things a man can do is selflessly provide for a woman (and by extension his family), but it also happens to be one of the most submissive things, imo. it all depends on the framing, i guess. i prefer the latter, obviously :P
