Lately I've been feeling a deep longing lately to crack my knuckles and write some strongly-typed, direct, procedural code in a chunky language with the network connection turned off and zero AI agents anywhere in sight. You know, like.. programming. Not whatever this other stuff is.

It's cathartic :) Depends on your definition of chunky. X86 assembly is a good one XD

I guess I have something that I work on that is very similar. And it is! The only documentation is the reference manuals (half of which is printed out), there is no other documentation/forums you can search up, and even if you tried AI agents couldn’t do it. Resource constrained environments are nice to develop for

The appeal of Zig

hmmm, yea maybe you're right. I've been looking for an excuse to learn Zig, and maybe this weird desire I have right now is the thing.

Ride the lizard, Vinney. You won't regret it. Zig is the LTP low-level language.

i don't know... this thing was invented from the ground up by one dude, including the functional language(s) - and no types. https://docs.opfn.co

Or something like Odin if you want a more quiet and peaceful experience (less library support).

Why does this thing feel like Urbit all over again btw?

vinney...axkl12d ago
it is specifally an offshoot of urbit. one of the early urbit devs proposed changes to NOCK that weren't implemented and he went on to create PLAN. our company forked his "urbit-like" (called Plunder) in an attempt to build some usable applications on top of it. short story: it was a bit too early for that and we failed. but the upstream work is continuing as far as I know.
