We are not very active on Nostr, because when my VPN is on (and it's always on), my relay connection count looks as follows:

Depends on VPN IP

Damus, but it's irrelevant. It's relay owners policies.

VPN 24/7 here. I’ll rarely run into that issue but I just switch servers.

I don't experience this issue. I did whoever experienced it with Tor sometimes.

No issues with the VPN. It used to stall sometimes but after the recent updates it works just fine. Doesn’t interfere with the relays

Reduce your relays to less than 10 and test it again, 22 is too many and causes issues. Reducing the number increases considerably the performance of any client.

How do I make sure my client still collects all the messages bi want to see? When the VPN is on and I'm connected to 4-5 relays, I pretty much don't see anything

Take control of your relays with a curated smart short list and specially your own one, I suggest "Nostr RS Relay" I assume you are using or Umbrel or Star9 OS already, if not, consider the own build of Star9 way more robust OS than Umbrel https://github.com/Start9Labs/nostr-rs-relay-startos Choose robust relays, Primal censors but most newbs use it, therefore you need it, Damus is decent and does not censor, for videos and media content in general best to include as well nostr.band , nos.lol seems solid as well, you can check online for relays reliability as well.

It's a company VPN It doesn't "switch locations"

I understand. Maybe try lowering your relay count. There’s a known bug when you have 10+ 📝 baf8ace7…

I will suggest you use Citrine as your personal relay and a Tor based relay with your own server, Star9 is the most convenient: https://marketplace.start9.com/nostr Here the Citrine link to github https://github.com/greenart7c3/Citrine In my setup, I rarely have to wait once I open Amethyst, on a TOR bad day, around 10 secs until the feed loads, after that all is good. Then choose your relays logically, Damus, Primal, mom, mostr, band and 0xchat are the most used and reliable therefore best to have then in your Public Outbox and in your Public Inbox...pick three of those, mix them... Your DM inbox needs for sure the 0xchat and the nostr1. hope this helps PS. Thanks for everything you do for privacy 👊

Got it, you are not wrong for a business, but for most people, a decent small server with Star9 OS does the job quite well and it is very convenient. I can tell you my experience, which it surprised me to the point that now is my default to go, quite reliable and easy is an understatement. My setup is similar to the product Star9 sells with their SERVER PURE for $1.15K, an i7 64GB RAM Crucial SSD 4TB, little to no maintenance, quite reliable, running for years NextCloud, CryptPad, SimpleX server, Star9 pages (love that one), File Browser, Nostrudel, Nostr RS Relay, Bitcoin Core and thanks to the users Market Place, now as well Monero full Node, uptime Kuma, Dojo, WebTop (surprised how well it works) and IPFS, weekly full backups with successful tested restore from scratch, IMO, a well setup server Star9 is no toy. Now, if you were talking about Umbrel, agree 100%, tested for a day as a fun project, fun but a no-no for anything serious, I don't get why people host their data or risk their money on an unreliable OS and weak hardware.

nice, same here, powerful Star9 OS setup, it is quite robust, as you stated, surprisingly, I built my own as well, haven't try the WebTop but the CryptPad is my cloud, simply great, works so well, so it does file browser and IPFS
