Yes, that is true. He was worshipped before Athanasius, but that doesn’t mean that this was what he taught.
I was born and raised as a Christian, so I’m speaking from some level of experience, having looks into this extensively.
Jesus never once said he was the Creator of the heavens and the earth, nor that he created mankind. Jesus himself is created like the rest of us (albeit differently to us, ie having no father, much like Aadam).
But as you can imagine, over time, messages get distorted and changed due to whatever reason. That no doubt happened to Christianity. That’s clear from the fact that nobody before that time ever entertained the idea of worshipping a person. Only worshipping God. The first two commandments is an example of that
