I homeschool because I refuse to outsource my childrenโ€™s worldview to strangers with agendas. Call it extreme. I call it responsible parenting.

What tools and resources are you using to do this?

There are many ways to do it, there are always some laws to follow, and then there is much that will be determined by preference of the parents and goals for the kids. I.E. if you want scholastic scholarships to โ€œelite universitiesโ€ for your kids, you are going to have to plan and live according to those prerequisites. But most home school parents just want well rounded, non-indoctrinated, and actually educated children โ€” and then there are many exceptions to that

Congrats on being able to have the resources necessary to make that happen. I call that a luxury.

It's literally the cheapest option. I'm currently paying $xxxx per kid per month to go to Montessori. When they age out we likely will move to homeschool. Government indoctrination camps should not be an option to be considered.

Agreed! I'd actually like to do more homeschooling podcasts, would you be interested? My wife and I are homeschooling 3 children (soon to be 4).

I was homeschooled all the way through high school (back before the concept was close to popular) and now home school my three sons. Trust me, itโ€™s no luxury, itโ€™s a decision and a commitment which forces you to do certain things, not do certain things, etc But I have long told my wife, the day the US gov tells us we have to put our kids in public school is the day Iโ€™m leaving for another country.

Do you have a particular curriculum that you are following and how do you organise the day for the kids? Eg what time do they start and what time do they finish?

We homeschooled our son (now 33) for the first 2 yrs. (Just did the 3 Rโ€™s and sprinkled in history, art, geography, phs ed. Whatever we felt like. Guess we did alright - he got into USC (which was a mistake IMO and another story..) Then took him out of school about 30 days a yr for whatever reasons - went to RE closings, lawyers, our pizzerias, maybe just goofed off on nice days - until around 8th grade. (Girls and sports) Best thing we ever did. I should have done it longer. You never get those years back. Enjoy them while you have them- it goes all too quickly.

Some of the homeschool families in my parish do "pods" and work together, taking turns,, teaching different things, following a classical education curriculum, including Latin and Greek and reading all the important old things. Those kids are doing great. Letting the government have any access to our children is a very bad idea. Interesting rabbit hole to understand what our government schools really are: look up the 48ers.

Devils advocate.. theyโ€™re missing the social aspect, relationships, competition. You also must have the means to do it

I disagree. Worst mistake I ever made was going to public school after being homeschooled. (Second worst mistake was getting a job after having been self employed as an adolescent)

Its normal. Oldest in college. Youngest just starting. And we did it against government wishes. In the US it is a no brainer.

I get some sobering realisations sometimes that I'm apparently some freak of society now. Imagine something so radical as to educate your own child
