It is an honest question. I was just wondering how do people fund working on free software. Is it by getting grants or by giving the software away and then having people pay for support?

You have (or work for) a business that needs feature X to do what you do. You implement software to do X. Not wanting the bother of IP-lawyering, you release it as open source. A week later, somebody who needs X and Y finds your work, and implements Y. "Software is just business processes converted to math" - Some guy
