Also, is google maps really the only allowed app for the 'search merchants' function?

Club Orange16d agoHi there, we only use approximate location for showing you nearby events, people and merchants and you can turn off distance showing from your settings. We don’t use Google Maps.
Most importantly we don’t do KYC, so you can be as anonymous as you like
