That version of the religion is very new - it was created in America within the last 100 years, at least partially by the CIA. For the ~2k years until now, "Israel" was understood to represent the church, and in the last 500 years the point of contention was whether "church" means the political organization or the body of believers irrespective of organizations. The Protestants were correct on this point, but without a cohesive unifying organization, they got corrupted and forgot what it was all about. The Reformation is now a complete failure. Basically the only salient point we all agree on at this point is that Calvinism is garbage, and that's msjnly a generational dispute because Calvinism was quite popular with our grandparents' generation - more importantly, when pushed, no one seems knowledgeable enough to explain why its garbage, only that it is garbage. The Reformation is truly dead. It was built on the premise that educated parishioners could understand the bible for themselves, but they certainly do not.
