Yes it is a scam, but it is also partially on her... A little bit of research would have given her options, a free os like Linux gives even more freedom.... We need to get out of the subscription trap. We are not only being trapped by social media, but by practically every aspect of our life. It is time to step away from the trap.

There are open source alternatives to windows and word, excel, etc. Linux and LibreOffice. She will find out if she fucks around a bit.
