I would be willing to bet a chunk of those proxy their public endpoint via a cloud server, while actually being self hosted (I do this)

Aren't these just the clearnet nodes? But yes, they are mostly on centralized server farms like AWS

Because I don't want you or anyone else to ping my node or any domain that I'm running and see my home IP address. It's simply a matter of privacy. Tor nodes are great but unreliable. This allows me to use both Tor and ClearNet and have a reliable node.
