Expanding the grazing empire a little more. We’re now finally all the way up to the remains of the old stone fence. Next year we’ll keep going on💪

One of these CMI300’s can do just over 2/3 of an acre of raw mature forest in about 6 hours. If you’ve already salvaged the wood and it’s just stumps and surface debris, 8-10k m2 in a day. We are engaged in this kind of work for farmers and the oilfield in northern AB. I do most of the estimating for these jobs. If you ever have any questions about this kind of thing, hit me up. Nice land you have there.

Awesome machine you got there! We just seed grass seeds directly into the forest floor and rotationally graze it afterwards. It’s of course not optimal in the short term, but we found it works quite well for the low investment. We got plenty of open fields for baling, so it’s pasture for the summer we need. Operators charge around $20 000 per hectare for that kind of job here (grinding only), how does that compare to your figures? Side note: I’m going to get rid of a few stumps to expand our baling field in april/may (a group of trees was left standing under a fence once and the stumps occupy a very large area now). I’ll be renting a smaller machine and might give it a go on some of our other clear cut areas as well.

We leave as many as we can up to 30% canopy cover, given the right type. Here we cut down mostly fully grown spruce, which would only deteriorate in quality if left on pasture (root damage leads to a certain type of fungus spreading towards the trunk and rotting it from the inside out which is very hard to see). Some areas however is left open, as we live in the arctic and need quite big areas for baling. We like to change up the areas we use, so cant of course have trees there one year and not the other. But the roads and streams we try to cover with trees, so that there is never too far from one to another😎
