“$275 billion is a number that requires context. The entire annual budget of the US Department of Education is $79 billion. American nonprofit health systems receive more in tax exemptions each year than the federal government spends educating children. In exchange, they are required to provide “community benefit.” The definition of community benefit is written by the organizations that receive the exemption. It includes parking lot subsidies. Executive education. Medical research that generates patents the hospital owns. And charity care that averages 2.3% of revenue. The twenty-five largest nonprofit health systems in America have been analyzed using their own public filings. What they owe and what they deliver are not the same number. The gap between them is not a rounding error.” - Dutch Rojas #TheRojasReport
