First step in building the home lab! Dad graciously handed me down a mini NAS with some still decent drives in it! Any tips from others on building a home lab? Anything goes. I don’t even have a final goal, I’m just vibing. Primarily wanting to have a beefy local storage library, and then also host some local LLM(s), Minecraft server, node, etc. Localize everything. The sky is the limit I guess. What do you think is a home lab essential? What are you using your home lab for?

Segment anything that is accessible remotely from the rest of your network

Setup a backup server, and try to do some infra as code 😛

I would also get something like this router, throw pfSense on it. Could help with network protection, setting up vlans, etc https://protectli.com/product/fw4b/

That was definitely on my mind, but not sure exactly what it means (when talking about a server rack / home lab) or how to achieve it. Are you talking about having an air gapped segment? Or is there something on the network side of things that I can do that you’re talking about.

What you want is a managed router. These let you do things like deploy custom configurations and create sub + virtual networks. You don't want an airgap, but you want to separate less trusted/more exposed devices to not be able to see all the other devices on your network - primarily if it gets compromised. Put those devices on their own virtual network.
