I guess what I was referring to is more of a New York sophistication thing, rather than throwing on a t-shirt. From Jazz to blues the players dressed for their gig. I'm not saying you need to wear a suite that's definitely more Jazz, but a cool shirt, a hat or a vest, says "I'm a performer" and caring how one presets themselves to their audience is a sign of respect and gratitude for that audience.
