My understanding is you can have them unloaded but ammo and where you can use them is EXTREMELY restricted, e.g. you can’t concealed carry and in practice they aren’t realistically usable for self defense. Open to being corrected, not something I know thoroughly.

It’s pretty restricted in a lot of states in the US too. But why are they not usable for self defense?

You have to have an almost impossible to get permit to use for self defense. Having a firearm that you can’t load or use outside of a gun range is effectively unusable for self defense https://thegunzone.com/can-you-carry-a-concealed-weapon-i…

Seems like you can make it work but it’s a hassle. Consider the tradeoffs. The hassle might be worth it for higher standard of living and a safer environment.
