... with the excuse of AI.
Two and a half years ago the tech world saw massive layoffs with the same "reason", but we all know that LLMs weren't capable enough to replace that many devs back then. I called it out at the time, as it's common for companies to over-hire when their economy is good. It's no coincidence that prices went up after fuel prices went up. The result is companies buying less software, and that's when the layoffs happened.
I'm not saying that Block is going through the same scenario, but I'm always suspicious when a previous lie is repeated. When I read the memo he sent out today, there were a couple portions that had me saying, "BS" out loud, or seeing the real message. Like, how he will always honor the people he's laying off. No shit. He's going to continue to benefit from what they helped build. That was their agreement though. It's just a deceivingly pompus thing to say.
No company, especially a publicly held one, wants to say, "We're laying off people because we fucked up." That message could easily cause a downward spiral to doom. There will always be an excuse that it's being done to make things better, or in the case of "AI", due to marching into innovation.
