How a 500-meter gap between two streams created a sovereign nation for 385 years This map shows one of the weirdest border anomalies in history. The green is the Pope’s land, the pink is Florence, and that tiny white strip is Cospaia. In 1441, both states thought the border was a stream called Rio, but they didn't realize there were actually two parallel streams with the same name. Neither side claimed the land in between, so the local peasants just declared themselves a Republic. They stayed independent until 1826, mostly because they were useful as a tax-free zone for everyone around them. I’ve been digging into the cartographic history of this "forgotten" border and just published the free full story (with more maps) on my Substack, Arca Arcana. https://open.substack.com/pub/arcarcana/p/cospaia-the-rep… Source: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=122215813724506031
